A brand-new Matrix Innovation Center will open at the intersection of Korte Mahlerlaan and De Boelelaan in late 2027. The building will focus on startups, scale-ups, and spin-ins in the field of Life Science & Health, working on groundbreaking applications at the intersection of science, healthcare, and technology.

The center, being built on the VU Campus in Amsterdam, will be an innovative incubator for start-ups and fast-growing companies active in medical deep tech. A significant boost for Amsterdam’s knowledge ecosystem. Ivo Sweep, Managing Director of Matrix Innovation Centers: “Construction will begin here in September not only on a beautiful and sustainable building, but above all on a place where science and entrepreneurship will connect and strengthen each other.”

It's already coming alive

To mark the start of construction in September, Matrix, along with its direct project partners Rabobank and VU University Amsterdam, sowed flowers at the construction site. This symbolic gesture aligns with the Life Sciences & Health Innovation Center’s ambition: to create space for growth, innovation, and collaboration. “Just like the flowers that will bloom in the near future, the community working on the healthcare of tomorrow is growing here,” says Sweep.

ECOSYSTEM FOR SHARED KNOWLEDGE

The brand-new Matrix building will offer space to startups, scale-ups, and spin-ins active in Life Sciences & Health. By combining high-quality office and lab space with a large social area featuring a restaurant, meeting rooms, event spaces, space for experiments, and access to talent, data, financing, and venture support, an ecosystem is created where young companies can launch, accelerate, and scale.

Ivo Sweep continues: “This will be a place where ideas from the lab quickly find their way into social applications that make a difference. Actively connecting science and entrepreneurship creates innovation that truly matters.”

About the building

When designing the Life Sciences & Health Innovation Center, architectural firm NUDUS chose sustainability as a central starting point. The building has nine floors with a total floor area of approximately 10,500 m² (VVO). Starting in 2027, the building will offer high-quality laboratories, shared facilities, and workspaces for innovative companies and researchers. The building is firmly rooted in fertile soil: at the heart of a vibrant ecosystem of leading scientists, international specialists, and advanced research facilities.

The focus is on AI-driven diagnostics, in silico and in vitro research, and clinical collaboration. The center is being developed by the Matrix Innovation Center, in close collaboration with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC. The project is funded by Rabobank, and the main contractor is De Vries en Verburg. Completion and opening are scheduled for the end of 2027.

About Matrix Innovation Centers

Matrix was founded in 1989 and is a partnership between the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), the City of Amsterdam, and Rabobank. Like all other Innovation Centers developed and managed by Matrix, this new building is specifically designed to promote efficient working, meeting, and knowledge sharing. Currently, Matrix has seven Innovation Centers at Amsterdam Science Park, home to more than one hundred deep-tech startups, scale-ups, and spin-ins.

Planning

Construction will begin in mid-August 2025, with an opening planned for late 2027.
